講演要旨

Our perception of the world is not fixed, but depends on experience, a fact that can be confirmed simply by observing the behaviour of subjects in perceptual experiments. Performance in a wide variety of detection, discrimination, and identification tasks improves with practice. For example, practice enables subjects to easily detect visual patterns that initially were invisible, or to discriminate voices that initially sounded the same, or to identify faces of individuals we did not previously know. These effects of practice, referred to as perceptual learning, have several interesting properties that, taken together, suggest that the adult brain retains a high degree of plasticity throughout our lifetimes. Our presentation will provide a broad overview of perceptual learning that addresses such questions as: How much experience is required for perceptual learning to occur? How specific are practice effects and how long do they persist? Why does practice improve performance? and What neural changes are associated with perceptual learning? We also will discuss the possibility that some developmental aspects of perception can be thought of as examples of life-long learning, both in the context of face processing and in the context of aging.
