・講演題目
An Introduction to the applied use of Q Methodology to Support HCI

・講演要旨

This presentation discusses the use of Q Methodology in the context of exploring how systems, computers, networks and information needs are conceptualised by the different participants in there chain of use. HCI should be informed by human understandings, that are based on substantive research that is capable of exploring such understandings and perceptions. This presentation describes and suggests the use an established methodology for the examination of human perceptions, Q Methodology, and briefly discusses its potential for use in Human Computer Interaction.

The origins of Q Methodology extend back to 1935 when invented by William Stephenson. Since that time Q Methodology has been frequently associated with quantitative forms of analysis due to its involvement with factor analysis of Q-sort technique.  However it is its ability to reveal subjectivity, people's views, attitudes, opinions, understandings, and experiences that accounts for its increasing popularity in a range of innovative studies.  Q Methodology differs from conventional factor analysis in that with Q the factor represents the variance that is common to the people associated with the factor (Brown, 1980). The use of this methodology has recently been applied to the development of Web Based information services and to the development of a WIKI in an industrial research unit.

The presentation briefly introduces Q Methodology and gives an example of it application including a Concourse, A Sort and examples of the type of results that it obtains.
