Subjective measures of unconscious knowledge
Zoltan Dienes (University of Sussex)
Given that a conscious mental state is a state of which we are conscious of being in, I will argue for the use of subjective measures to determine whether people know consciously or unconsciously. The use of subjective measures to demonstrate unconscious knowledge will be illustrated by data on how people come to perceive strings of letters as being well formed or not (artificial grammar learning paradigm). A distinction will be made between knowledge of the structure of a domain that enables skilled interaction with the domain (structural knowledge) and knowledge that an item has relevant structure (judgement knowledge). I will illustrate how when judgment knowledge is conscious, structural knowledge can be conscious or unconscious by subjective measures, using data from the artificial grammar learning paradigm. Specifically, cross cultural differences in the acquisition of unconscious structural knowledge are explored. Previous research has shown Japanese compared to Western people have a preference for holistic rather than analytic conscious processing in perception, memory and thinking. We show for the first time that this cultural bias dramatically affects cross cultural differences in the acquisition of unconscious knowledge.

Appreciating art verbally: Verbalization can make a work of art be both undeservedly loved and unjustly maligned
Ayumi Yamada (Aoyama Gakuin University)
Two experiments examined whether appreciating art verbally would aesthetically confuse viewers. Participants were asked to verbalize why they either liked or disliked two different kinds of paintings; one piece was representational, the other piece was abstract. Those who verbalized their reasons for liking the artworks were more likely to prefer the representational painting, whereas those who verbalized their reasons for disliking the paintings were also more likely to dislike the representational painting. While it was easy to describe reasons for both liking and disliking representational art, the same proved difficult for abstract art. The findings suggest that due to its figurative qualities people will be encouraged to generate reasons to describe representational art, rather than abstract art, and that these reasons could potentially be biased and cause them to change their preferences in line with these reasons.

Cultural differences in sensitivity to emotional cues
Keiko Ishii (Kobe University)
In the last two decades, research in cultural psychology has suggested that different practices across cultures encourage divergent modes of attention and perception. Whereas North Americans tend to attend more analytically to a focal object while ignoring its context, East Asians including Japanese tend to attend more holistically to both a focal object and its context (for review, see Nisbett, Peng, Choi, & Norenzayan, 2001). Recent studies focusing cultural variation in cognition have thus shed some light on idea, called New Look, that perception is significantly affected by endogenous factors such as expectations, values, and needs (Bruner & Goodman, 1947). In line with these studies on culture and cognition, we have investigated whether and to what extent culturally specific practices (e.g., high- vs. low-context communication practices) and values (e.g., personal control to influence events vs. adjusting to expectations to influence events) influence individual's sensitivity to emotional cues and found that compared to North Americans, Japanese are more sensitive to vocal tone and more vigilant to the disappearance of smiles. Implications for future work on culture and the process of emotional cues are discussed.
